Supreme Court Asks Centre To Frame Model Scheme For Community Kitchen To Tackle Starvation Deaths.

On Tuesday i.e 18.01.2022, while hearing a writ petition seeking the formulation of a community kitchen policy to avoid starvation deaths the bench comprising of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice AS Bopanna, and Justice Hima Kohli asked the centre to consider framing the model scheme on community kitchens to address hunger and malnutrition across the country.

As Attorney General cited his concerns over the funding of the nationwide scheme, the bench clarified that the intention of the Court particularly is of preparation of a model scheme and possibility of exploring resources and additional food grains. As far as logistics are concerned, it's for State Governments to take care of.

The Chief Justice of India also clarified that the Court doesn't want the Government to formulate a strict jacket scheme and added that various factors need to be considered while formulating the scheme.

The Chief Justice Of India also stated that the scheme needs to have a statutory framework so that it cannot be discontinued on a change of policy.

The Attorney General said that the centre will come out with a concrete scheme and have also sought 3 weeks time to hold a meeting to finalise a scheme.
